Karen Howes‘ written works include credits in television, documentary and stage. She has written over two dozen plays and has been produced in academic, professional, regional, and community venues throughout the country. Several of her plays have been selected for festivals, and she is often commissioned to write original works for specific theatrical use.  Her play “Roadkill” won the Maxim Mazumdar New Play Competition for best full length play in 2011. She was featured twice in the Academy Theater’s Three Plays in May series, a two-time winner of Jersey Voices, selected for a showcase production by Multi-shades Atlanta, was a semi-finalist in Ashland, selected three times for Playground LA, and produced in festivals atArtsCenterMiribou, and The Alleyway Theater. She is currently a member of Skylight Theater’s PlayLab development group in Beverly Hills.

As a journalist, Karen has written hundreds of magazine features on science and technology, which have been published throughout the world and translated into numerous languages. Throughout her career, she has taught classes in creative writing, acting and literature, and she has worked with inner city schools and non-profit organizations to foster an appreciation for and hands-on experience in the performing arts and writing.  She received a degree in Philosophy from The College of William and Mary and an MFA in Creative Writing and Writing for Performing Arts at the University of California, Riverside at Palm Desert. She is a member of The Dramatists Guild, The Alliance of Los Angeles Playwrights, the Los Angeles Female Playwrights Initiative, Theater Communications Group and PEN Center USA.
